I feel like I really found my intuitive eating groove before I had multiple kids, but taking care of lots of demanding littles for several years (and feeling so hungry and tired with every pregnancy and while nursing!) has asked a lot of my body and I’ve definitely been thrown off. I was resisting reading this post because it sometimes feels impossible to get back on track. But (of course!) this ended up being just the reminder I needed that, yes, I can actually learn to listen to my body again and it’s okay that it’s a process and a journey.♡
So beautifully said, Kathryn! It is beautiful how you've listened to your body in the tender times of pregnancy and postpartum. You should be so proud of yourself. And, yes, those "check ins" with self can be so powerful-- listening to our cues can be SO easy to fall out of track with, but little by little we can return!
This resonates so much!! I was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa in high school, and its been a transformative journey ever since. I'm so thankful I was *forced* to go to a dietician, therapist, and doctor and learn about intuitive eating at a young age, and now in my mid twenties I am completely recovered! I never thought it was possible. But it IS!!!
Would love to know where you found your info on intuitive eating (so I can check it out) and how you grew to be an intuitive eater. Was there a light bulb moment when you stopped looking at cookie dough as a “bad” food?
Ooooof, this could be a whole post on its own! While I could elaborate a LOT, I think one helpful shift has been thinking of food as "does this GIVE me energy?" or does this DRAIN my energy"? (and that's just not nutritionally speaking! sometimes a big glass of wine and charcuterie and dessert with friends IS an energy-giving thing!)
I had a phase in my 20’s where I was obsessed with eating clean. It made me look and feel really healthy. But the entire time I was resisting eating anything out of that box. I was obsessed with tracking my food and figuring what else I needed for the rest of the day. Nothing intuitive about that. 😵💫
I really appreciate this post. We don’t need to beat ourselves up over a little sugar.
Fast forward to today-- I am ttc my first baby! And my mindset on food right now is: will this support my body to carry a baby/support the growth of a baby? (And yes I still have treats:)
YES. Exactly. The times I was most obsessed with "being healthy" was when I was mentally most UNhealthy because I was so *out* of my body and only focused on metrics, calories, and rules.
Came back to this post to comment how much I LOVE it! Re: the comment above, YES, please consider additional posts on intuitive eating ✨
Thank you so much for the encouragement, Mac!

Beth. Thank you for sharing. SO proud of you. so proud of me. so proud of us! Day by day, meal by meal, it really does get better!
