Hey Kate, I loved this post! I wanted to ask about liquid vitamin D options. I’ve heard from a few medical professionals that our body absorbs the liquid supplements better than pill supplements but the cost difference in the two options is big so I have avoided switching! Have you read studies around this or have any insight?
Hi, Jaime! Great question. Not for all vitamins, but yes-- liquid vitamins can be absorbed more quickly, have higher potency, and absorption rate (as it is not having to be digested like a pill) and because of its liposomal state. That said, supplement "pill" forms also work great. So, I always recommend whatever is EASIER & whatever you are more likely to take consistently (personally why I take the supplement form!).
Love this breakdown, Kate!! I started becoming more conscious of my Vitamin D levels when I experienced SAD while living in DC. Now that I’m in a much sunnier climate (NC), I take some of my husbands gummy supplements every now and again (which his doctor recommended!) Feel like it might be finally time to get my own. 😂
I love this! I am curious because I have looked into taking some magnesium but I have seen that you should supplement vitamin d to help magnesium absorb? Is there any truth behind that? I know you have talked before about taking magnesium as well.
I just bought the Vitamin D supplements and my husband & I are going to start taking them! We’re about to have 2 kids in daycare and need the boost, we’re also going to be trying to get everyone outside during the sun time hours when we can!
Thanks for breaking this down - I love having science as to why I should be taking certain supplements.
Wow. You spoke my language today. For the last 10 months my husband has been acutely idk with necrotizing pancreatitis secondary to a gallstone. We are finally on the up and up after being able to get his gallbladder out. However-we have been told by his providers that he will likely be deficient in many nutrients. We had his Vitamin D level changed and after two weeks of a very high prescribed dose he was like a new person!!! I am way more conscious of this myself living in Northern MN. I do try and walk outside everyday -even in the weather elements but the sun just doesn’t shine! Thanks for this amazing article!
I’ve seen a lot that vitamin D should be taken with K so your body can absorb it better. Do you find this to be true? Do you have other supplements that have K in it?
No but actually I was just talking to my partner about this as he started getting dizzy spells when he started his job in the MICU! (I’m convinced it’s partly because he works indoors for 12-13 hours and some days doesn’t even see the Sun)
I also get SAD during the winter even though I work outside AND in a sunny state....so I had been considering us starting a vit D supplement! Thanks for this!
Of course! yes, I think it can be so beneficial for so many people-- especially those that work indoors all day or may experience SAD! Definitely something to chat with your doctor about ◡̈

Thanks for this! Would you take this in addition to a multivitamin that includes Vit D?
Loved this! any thoughts / insight on how to best pair with other seasonal affective interventions for those of us dealing with the big dark winters?

It's not necessarily about absorption, but that they work synergistically together (and can help reduce risk of hypercalcemia related to vitamin D). https://ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5613455/ . I have tried this one that has both before & I liked it ◡̈ https://shrsl.com/4a385
*immediately buys vitamin D*
