✅ 16 new year's resolutions that AREN'T about losing weight or saving money
plus, a peek at MY goals for 2025... 👀
Let’s cut to the chase—
I’m that annoying person.
You know the one: full of “new year, new me” energy, buzzing with ideas, setting ambitious goals, excitedly picking out a fresh planner, filling out their habit tracker…
Simply put— I love a new year.
The calendar is blank, the momentum is fresh, and feels like there’s nothing but potential ahead. There’s just something about January 1st that energizes me.
[I know, I know… eye roll.]
Because, I get it— not everyone feels inspired by the new years energy.
Admittedly, it can feel a little counterintuitive to dive into fresh goals right in the middle of “hibernation” season. Who’s dreaming big and feeling exceptionally motivated when it’s dark at 4 PM?
There’s absolutely merit in embracing a season of rest if that’s what you’re feeling called to.
But if you are feeling inspired and motivated to build positive habits or manifest an amazing year? That’s also valid.
✨ Both rest and inspiration have their place— ultimately, honor what feels right for you at this time of year. ✨
That said, before my resolution skeptics make up their mind, I’d love to offer a fresh perspective—New Year’s goals don’t have to be serious solely focused on “productive” things like going to the gym, saving money, or kicking bad habits…
In fact, they can be FUN! A resolution can be as small, inconsequential, or random as you’d like—
Here’s a quick list of ideas for new years resolutions that are a little, um, untraditional, but still lead to self-growth and new experiences! ⬇️
👩🏻🍳 Try one new recipe each month with an ingredient you’ve never used before— think miso paste, saffron, or some random funky cheese you’ve been wanting to try.
🌅 Wake up early to watch the sunrise 4x this year— a small way to break out of autopilot & ENGAGE with the world around you. Just you, the quiet morning air, and a thermos of coffee— once per season. Ahhhh.
🎥 Watch six “famous” movies you’ve somehow never seen— you’ll finally get those references everyone’s talking about 🤣
🧶 Try a new hobby or skill each season—whether it’s knitting, nordic skiing, pottery, or learning a few phrases in a new language, give something new a shot!
🫙 Start a gratitude jar— Write down one thing you’re grateful for each week, then read them all at the end of the year. So simple & fun.
🥂 Go on [X] amount of date nights this year— whether with a partner or a solo date, this is such a fun way to "gamify" and quantify prioritizing quality time (My husband and I do this every year!)
🧘🏻♀️ Create a “no-phone” zone for 30 minutes every day— no screens, just time and space to read, journal, cook, or simply be present.
🍝 Master one of your favorite niche foods from scratch—whether it’s a specific pasta, sushi, or a certain desert— commit to trying different techniques, experimenting, and MASTERING how to make it in 2025
🧪 Do an “experiment” each month— for 30 days at a time, challenge yourself to a new habit, routine, or wellness practice to shake things up. (Don’t understand what I’m referring to? Check out this post!)
☺️ Do one random act of kindness each week—pay for someone’s coffee, send some snail mail, compliment a stranger, drop off a meal for a friend, or do something small to spread good energy!
🍕 Host a theme night once per season—pick a random theme (like make your own pizza night, an 80s movie marathon, or a vision boarding evening), invite your pals, and have fun with it!
📸 Capture physical photos— use 1 disposable camera per month or tangibly print out 20 favorite photos monthly to save some tangible, screen-free keepsakes!
🧺 Declutter one space in your house each month— whether it's one room or simply one drawer, identifying a singular space of your house to clean out, organize, and declutter monthly.
🌱 Add one new, unique plant to your space— and do your best to keep it alive all year— learn about its type, what type of water/sun it needs, etc.
📚 Read at least 3 books from genres you wouldn’t normally pick— step outside your comfort zone! You may love it orrrr you may hate it— but there is merit to trying something new.
☕️ Try a drink from every coffee shop in your town— a fun way to explore locally, shop small, and get some delicious treats in the process (bonus points if you “rate” them and keep track of your favs!)
See? Resolutions don’t have to be overly rigid or solely focused on productivity—
“Improving” your life can be a lot more than metrics, accomplishments, or skills— it can also involve fun, curiosity, and trying new things.
