👚 I Recreated 5 Pinterest Outfits With Items I Already Owned...
Stuck in a style rut? Try this.
Do you ever open your closet and just feel… uninspired?
Because, same.
Personally, I lost a bit of my connection to my closet ever since getting pregnant with my son 2.5 years ago.
It’s hard to describe…
It’s not like I necessarily “lost” my style.
I still have a very clear idea of what I like and what I don’t like — but moreso I had lost my MOTIVATION to style my clothes, put together cute outfits, that sort of thing.
In general, I’ve felt less playful and creative with my clothing, and have gotten into a rut of wearing the same basic, comfy, athleisure outfits on repeat.
…Again.
And again.
And again.
And, to be honest? I’ve sort of used my first pregnancy, postpartum, nursing, and now this twin pregnancy as an excuse.
“Oh nothing will fit me anyway, my body looks different now, it probably won’t fit my bump, it’ll probably get stained anyway…”
And, sure, a lot of that is valid.
There are a lot of changes (both bodily & logistically) that make dressing “cute” in this life stage a bit more challenging.
For example, I am currently in an awkward spot in terms of my bump size in pregnancy. Not quite ready for the full-blown maternity clothes, but I definitely cannot fit into most of my “normal” items either. Instead of rummaging through my closet to find something that fits, it’s quite frankly a lot easier to simply throw on the maternity yoga pants & call it a day!
But, when I’m honest with myself, I know that I DO have enough pieces in my closet that— even at this in-between size— I can still put together outfits that feel at least a little bit elevated.
I have just been lacking inspiration & motivation.
So, I decided to do a mini challenge…
I did what any millenial woman would do and opened my Pinterest clothing board. From there, I narrowed down 5 outfit photos that were speaking to me and that I thought I could recreate with pieces from my own closet. Finally, I set 3 simple ground rules.
I had to really try to recreate these outfits — not just use the cop out of “oh, nothing will look good or fit me because I’m pregnant.”
I couldn’t buy ANYTHING. Everything for this challenge needed to be from my own closet.
I had to have fun with it! Even though I knew I was documenting this challenge for The Reset, I gave myself permission that not every outfit recreation had to be a “success” (and you’ll see that #3 did, in fact, FLOP). But that’s okay! The point of this was to feel creative, try new things, & play around with the items I already own & love.
5 Pinterest Looks, 1 Wardrobe: Breaking Out of My Style Rut
To be honest, I think getting into a fashion rut is an inevitable part of life— especially during seasons of transition. It’s completely valid, understandable, and normal to lose touch with your personal style from time-to-time.
But, I also didn’t want to get stuck in that rut.
So, today, I'm walking you through an accessible mini challenge— recreating 5 specific Pinterest outfits with items you already own.
This turned out to be such a fun (and easy!) way to bring fresh energy, creativity, and a renewed outlook to getting dressed.
So, let’s get started! I recapped each of the 5 outfits with:
A short description of the outfit
My personal rating on how well I executed it
My main takeaway from that particular ‘fit.
Let’s go!
🌼 OUTFIT #1: A flowy blue shirt, white pants, a patterned headband, and sunglasses
Execution: I’d rate this one an 8/10! It probably could have been a 9/10 because I felt very *me* in this outfit. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, my 3 personal style words are earthy, timeless, and a little bit quirky, and I felt like this outfit really fit that bill. I’ve had all of these items for years, but I’ve never paired them in this exact way before so it was fun to use pieces I already had and just combine them differently.
Takeaway: I’d say my lesson from this one is even though you’re following an inspiration photo, you don’t have to follow it to the letter! For example, In the photo she has chunky earrings on, and I have so many earrings that I could’ve chosen from… But when I put them on it felt a little too much for me to have a headband, sunglasses, and earrings. So I just skipped ‘em. Simple as that. Don’t forget: inspiration photos are just that – inspiration! You don’t have to follow it super strictly— enjoy the inspo, but ultimately follow your gut and personal preferences.
